Want to get involved? We offer several ways to participate.
The Civic Symphony Association of San Francisco consists of several performance ensembles, which have different schedules and have different instrumental needs.
Depending on your skill level, instrument, and interest in repertoire, we have several groups that may be a good fit. If you fill out the form linked below, we will work with you to find the group that best matches what you’re looking for and has available room.
The three orchestras that the Association currently operates are:
The San Francisco Civic Symphony (SFCS) is a symphony orchestra that performs both standard works from well-known composers as well as new works by contemporary composers. The SFCS performs at least four concerts per year and rehearses on Wednesday evenings.
The Mozart to Mendelssohn orchestra performs works from the Classical and Early Romantic eras, roughly from Mozart to Mendelssohn. The M2M orchestra performs at least four concerts per year and rehearses on Tuesday evenings.
The Civic Strings is a smaller, string-focused ensemble, especially tailored for players getting reintroduced into classical music. This group is a string orchestra that provides a gentle re-entry into ensemble playing for those who may not have played for many years. Civic Strings performs music of the baroque and classical period with a focus on string technique for these eras. Civic Strings is directed by Thomas Alexander.
Summer Workshop is a summer workshop program for all players. The workshop is the perfect way to reintroduce yourself to playing in an ensemble. Players of all ability levels are welcome.
All groups are open to all interested musicians. There are no auditions. We rely on musicians to decide their own comfort level with the music being performed.
Do you enjoy working with diverse people to bring music to others? If so, please volunteer time to help make music happen. We have many areas that need your help, from concert set-up to strategic leadership on the board. Please let us know your interest here.
Don’t have free time but want to help ensure the orchestra can accomplish its mission? We rely solely on donations to offer these free events. Your donations allow us to continue making music for the community. We offer a three ways to be an active non-musician participant.
Want to hear live performances? Sign-up for our e-mail notices. We will keep you informed of all the upcoming events.
